October 11, 2014The dramatic snap of the head and the addictive rhythm of the Tango make it one of the most popular ballroom dances. Loaded with sensuality, the Tango is fun to watch and even more fun to perform. The basic Tango steps are relatively easy to learn, which makes this dance a great choice for beginners.
The Tango originated in the 1890s in Argentina and Uruguay and became popular in the U.S. in the early 1900s. Tango music has its influences from European and African culture, and incorporates the accordion, Bandoneon, piano, guitar, violin, and double bass.
The Tango is a partner dance. The frame—the way that the dancers hold their bodies to each other—is very important in the Tango. Most styles are danced in either the open embrace (there is space between the couple’s bodies) or close embrace (the couple is closely touching at either the chest or hip). The Tango’s rhythm is slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. The lead steps are heel leads—which means the heel of the foot comes down first instead of the toe.
There are three main types of Tango: Argentine, American, and International. But there are numerous Tango variations, including Tango de Salon, Tango Milonga, Tango Vals, Tango Milonguero, Tango Canyengue, Tango Nuevo, Show Tango, Tango Liso, and Ballroom Tango.
