July 29, 2014A healthy back plays a vital role in your overall health and quality of life. Treat it right and it will thank you. Here are some tips from health professionals to keep your back healthy, flexible, and strong.
- engage in regular back strength exercises and stretches
- strengthen your core by dancing at the Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Charlotte and Lake Norman
- improve and maintain good posture
- avoid heavy lifting (if you need to lift something heavy, bend with your legs and keep your back straight)
- lose weight (less weight equals less strain on your back)
- sleep right (sleeping on your back puts 55 pounds of pressure on your back). Place pillows under your knees, which cuts the pressure in half. Or sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees.
- wear shoes with good support
- quit smoking (nicotine restricts the flow of blood to the discs that cushion your vertebrae)
Check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program or if you have any concerns about your back.
