Originating in Spain in the late 1700s, the Bolero became popular in Cuba in the 1800s and was finally introduced in the United States in the 1930s.

Congas, bongos, castanets, and guitars are used in Bolero music to create beautiful melodies. The Bolero is danced in the close embrace to a very slow type of Rumba rhythm. This dance involves long, sweeping steps and a slip pivot—a rotation of the body on the ball of the supporting foot, which creates a pivot forward or backward. This pivot step is what makes the Bolero so graceful.

The Bolero is danced socially and in ballroom competitions. It can be a partner or a solo dance.
