Wedding Dance Lessons
Learning to dance for your wedding is a special gift that you and your spouse-to-be can give to each other that last long after the special day. Feeling confident and poised when you dance together will ensure that your very first dance together as wife and husband will be a memory you will cherish forever. The dancing you learn doesn’t stop at the reception. You’ll be able to dance together as a couple for years to come.
Don’t forget to coordinate with your wedding videographer/photographer to get the best ‘coverage’ of your special dance. You’ll need to talk to your DJ or wedding band as they’re used to most couples who can’t dance so you’ll find they quickly get other people on the dance floor to dance with you so you can ‘hide in the crowd’. You’ll want to make sure they don’t cut short your special dance.
It wasn’t so long ago that a couple’s first dance as man and wife, as special as it was, was only a wispy memory – a fact that was no small blessing for couples who happened to be poor dancers. With the advent of videography, a newlywed couple’s first dance is almost always recorded as a cherished memory for posterity… available for all to see for the next 50-60 years.
For this reason, prospective brides and grooms who want to be remembered as polished and graceful on their big day are opting to take dance lessons in preparation for what is one of the greatest memories of their lifetimes.
Wedding Dance Tips
- Don’t wait until the last minute. Remember that the schedule will get very hectic as the wedding day approaches. Dance instructors recommend starting four to six months earlier to allow more time for practice, especially if our students are newcomers to dancing.
- Remember that dance lessons can actually be a stress reliever. Dancing is good exercise. Lessons pull you out of the hustle and bustle of the day to spend an hour or so with your intended, having fun and learning together at the same time.
- Most couples choose their own ‘wedding song’. If you plan to dance to a special song(s) at your reception, feel free to bring a recording of it to your dance lessons so you can try it out with your instructor. On your personalized program you will be able to learn anything from general dancing to a choreographed routine to your special song.
- It’s OK if you haven’t chosen a song. On your very first lesson we will introduce you to the main dances most couples use. We can help make suggestions depending on which dance you like and do the best.
- Be patient when learning. Dancing is a great stress reliever, and a fun date night, so don’t put too much pressure on each other.
- Don’t try to teach your fiance. You’ll both have a lot more fun dancing if you let your instructor do the teaching.
- Practice in the right shoes. Wear shoes to your lessons that are similar to the ones you’ll be wearing on the big day.
- Be consistent with your appointments. The more often you come in, the less review there will be on each lesson. Plan at least once a week to get the most from your lessons.
- Use the classes & practices when possible. Everyone feels most comfortable on a private lesson, but the classes and parties will be closer to what the rest of your reception will be like, and the teachers will be there to help!
